These homemade crumpets are incredibly easy to make, light, airy, and feature those iconic golden holes perfect for soaking up butter and syrup.
Ingredients
- 1 1/2 cup milk
- 1/2 cup warm water
- 2 tsp yeast
- 1 tsp honey
- 2 cup bread flour
- 1 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp bicarbonate of soda
- 1 tbsp warm water
Preparation
- 1
In a jug, mix the lukewarm milk, warm water, yeast, and honey. Set aside until the mixture is foamy and bubbly.
- 2
In a bowl, combine the bread flour and salt, then create a well in the center. Pour in the yeast mixture and whisk until smooth like pancake batter. Cover the bowl and let it sit for 45 minutes.
- 3
After 45 minutes, mix the bicarbonate of soda with 1 tbsp of warm water in a small cup. Add this mixture to the batter and whisk well. Cover again and let rest for 10 minutes.
- 4
Heat a non-stick pan over medium heat. Grease your crumpet rings and place them in the pan. Fill the rings about 3/4 of the way with the batter.
- 5
Cook for about 6 to 7 minutes until the top is set with visible holes. Carefully remove the rings, flip the crumpets, and cook for another 30 seconds until the top is cooked through.
